Android Jetpack WorkManager Stable Release

Posted by Sumir Kataria, Software Engineering Lead & Jisha Abubaker, Product Manager

Simplify how you manage background work with WorkManager

Today, we're happy to announce the release of Android Jetpack WorkManager 1.0 Stable. We want to thank so many of you in our dev community who have given us feedback and logged bugs along the way - we've gotten here thanks to your help!

When we looked at the top problems faced by developers, we saw that doing background processing reliably and in a battery-friendly manner was a huge challenge. This meant that periodically fetching fresh content or uploading your logs was complex. Different versions of Android provided different tools for the job, each with their own API quirks. For example, listening for network or storage availability and automatically retrying your tasks involved a lot of work.

Our answer to these challenges was WorkManager. We introduced a preview of the Android Jetpack WorkManager library at Google I/O 2018 and have since iterated on it with additional features and bug fixes thanks to your valuable input.

The goal of WorkManager is to make background operations easy for you. WorkManager takes into account constraints like battery-optimization, storage, or network availability, and it only runs its tasks when the appropriate conditions are met. It also knows when to retry or reschedule your work--even if your device or app restarts.

We believe WorkManager is a friendly, approachable API that can take care of one of the most complex parts of Android for you so you can focus on the code that makes your app unique.

WorkManager Highlights

Here are some key features of WorkManager:

  • Lets you set constraints, such as network status or charge state, on when the task runs
  • Supports asynchronous one-off and periodic tasks
  • Supports chained tasks with input & output
  • Ensures task execution, even if the app or device restarts
  • Supports Android 4.0+ (API 14+)

Watch and read below to learn when and how to use WorkManager to simplify managing background work in your apps:

When to use WorkManager

WorkManager is best suited for tasks that can be deferred, but are still expected to run even if the application or device restarts (for example, syncing data periodically with a backend service and uploading logs or analytics data).

For tasks like sending an instant message that are required to run immediately or for tasks that are not required to run after the app exits, take a look at our background processing guide to learn which solution meets your needs.

How to use WorkManager

To get started with the WorkManager API, add the WorkManager dependency available on Google's Maven repository in Java or Kotlin to your application's build.gradle file:

dependencies {     def work_version = 1.0.0      // Java     implementation "android.arch.work:work-runtime:$work_version"      // Kotlin KTX + coroutines     implementation "android.arch.work:work-runtime-ktx:$work_version"   }

Now, simply subclass a Worker and implement your background work with doWork() and enqueue it with WorkManager.

class MyWorker(ctx: Context, params: WorkerParameters) : Worker(ctx, params) { override fun doWork(): Result { //do the work you want done in the background here return Result.success() } } // optionally, add constraints like power, network availability val constraints: Constraints = Constraints.Builder() .setRequiresCharging(true) .setRequiredNetworkType(NetworkType.CONNECTED) .build() val myWork = OneTimeWorkRequestBuilder() .setConstraints(constraints).build()

WorkManager will now take care of running your task when it detects that your device is charging and the network is available.

Why use WorkManager

Backward compatibility

WorkManager will leverage the right scheduling API under the hood: it uses JobScheduler API on Android 6.0+ (API 23+) and a combination of AlarmManager and BroadcastReceiver on previous versions.

It also seeks to ensure the best possible behavior so that it complies with system optimizations introduced in newer Android API versions to maximize battery and enforce good app behavior.

For example, WorkManager will schedule background work during the maintenance window for Android 6.0+ (API 23+) devices when the system is in Doze mode.

Reliable scheduling

With WorkManager, you can easily add constraints like network availability or charging status. Your work will run when the constraints are met and automatically retried if they fail while running. For example, if your task requires network to be available, the task will be stopped when network is no longer available and retried later.

You can also monitor work status and retrieve work result using LiveData. This allows your UI to be notified when your task is completed.

In the event that your work fails, you can control how your work is retried by configuring how backoff is handled.

WorkManager is also able to reschedule your work, using a record of your work in its local database, if an application or device restart occurs.

Control over how your work is run

We understand that each app has unique needs, and so do your tasks--even within the same app. WorkManager provides a simple yet highly flexible API surface to help configure your work and how it is run.

Take advantage of one-off scheduling with OneTimeWorkRequest or recurrent scheduling with PeriodicWorkRequest.

You can also chain your one time work requests to run in order or in parallel. If any work in the chain fails, WorkManager seeks to ensure that the remaining chain of work will not run. Read more about chaining work requests here.

If you require more flexibility over how WorkManager parallelizes and manages work, check out our advanced threading guide.

What developers have to say

redBus, the largest online bus ticketing platform, shares their experience using WorkManager to simplify how they collect user feedback in their Android app:

"Feedback is critical to redBus as we expand into other countries. It often happens that a user gives critical feedback about a functionality within the redBus app but when the app tries to upload the feedback to backend servers, there might not be enough network coverage or battery.
WorkManager has simplified the way redBus app delivers information to it's backend servers. WorkManager library's capability to handle parameters like network connectivity, battery and use appropriate handlers like AlarmManager or JobScheduler has enabled us to concentrate on building business logics and offloading execution complexity to WorkManager."

Review - OVERLORD II - It's Good To Be Bad, And Back On GOG!

Overlord II - Wallpaper
Overlord II - Title banner - transparent png

It took almost 10 years to be on GOG, but let's look at the bright side: this game improved on its predecessor in every way possible, and has aged nicely!

- Gameplay is more fun
- AI is more responsive and aggressive, making the game more challenging in general
- It's fun to battle against the "Roman-like" empire

Now, let's have fun pillaging innocent villages!😋

Improving Freemium Design - Knight Storm By MunkyFun

Ok, so I love medieval and renaissance themed entertainment so when I came across Knight Storm (https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/knight-storm/id568538733?mt=8) you bet I downloaded the game! I've been playing for a few weeks now and think some aspects of the game are really well done. However, like all games, I think there's some room for improvement as well.

What they did right:

Graphics

Knight Storm looks amazing. At first launch, my character rode his horse out of the castle, the title appeared and then the horse stood up in front of an amazing looking castle... I was ready for an epic adventure! The horses look realistic and animate beautifully. I was pretty amazed but remembered that MunkyFun is also the developer of My Horse so it made sense, but it doesn't discredit their ability to make beautiful graphics.

Also unhorsing my opponent feels very satisfying due to the visuals. I love the slow motion camera, his lance exploding into splinters and watching your opponent flip end over end off of his horse.

Blending game mechanics

I'm a big fan of breaking up tedious tasks or a single style of game mechanic with various other mechanics. In Knight Storm players not only joust and battle, but they also have a Castle that acts like a home base that generates coins, experience and potions for the player. One can also upgrade their equipment and get more sigils from the castle.

Humorous dialog

I am the minority of players that actually read the in game text, but I enjoyed the bits of humor that the developers threw in. Instead of using "next" or "ok" buttons, they used more humorous options.

They also wrote the dialog options as if coming from their character's thoughts.

There were a couple parts where I actually laughed out loud, but forgot to grab screenshots during those moments.

Upgrading makes you feel badass

When I upgrade a piece of armor or weaponry it really changes! You might not think this is a big deal, but so many games just change the color or give the equipment a better stat. I want to SEE the different item as well as the upgraded stats. Players need visual changes in order for them to feel like anything has even changed. Some games can get away with minor changes on smaller upgrades, but if you're asking someone to pay premium currency then that item/equipment/weapon better look visually awesome!

Look at beginning gear, some middle of the road equipment and then what end game equipment looks like.

Adding a chance mechanic to battles

I like their addition of sigils to combat. It's basically a game of rock, paper, scissors for bonus damage. It adds an element of chance to the battle without completely screwing the player if they don't make the right decision.

I always advise developers to have an element of chance in their games if it's going to be a more casual game or if they want mass market appeal. Some people love strategy, but even more love an element of chance. Take board games for example. Settlers of Catan has been one of the best selling modern board games. My wife doesn't like to play me in competitive strategy games and doesn't even enjoy medieval/renaissance themed games, but will play Catan with me because no matter how well I strategize the dice can make or break a game. It is one of the most brilliant chance/strategy combinations.

Multiplayer

Almost all games should have some multiplayer aspect and Knight Storm does too. Players can joust against each other for glory points which determines your leaderboard ranking. In addition to glory points, players can also earn fragments which are used to forge sigils at your castle. This gives players an additional benefit to the single player game for taking up your lance against other players.

What could be improved:

Balancing potions

As you can see from the screenshot below I have over 300 of each potion. I could play for hours with that many potions. Now I realize why there are potions and I think it's great to allow players to create potions so they can continue to play, but I wouldn't allow players to stockpile so many. There needs to be a better balance between potion creation and consumption.

Also having this many health or stamina potions makes their "Potion of revival" pointless. Why would I ever drop 5 gems on the "Potion of revival" when I can just forfeit back to the map screen, drink a bunch of health/stamina potions and try again?

Lack of customization

I love that I have a castle, I love the armor and weapon models but I just wish I could customize them! Having a little more control over what is happening and where in my castle would make me feel more attached to it. Same goes with my jouster. I would like to customize his armor, banner, color, something! I can upgrade him which is nice, but it would be awesome if I could design a crest for him or choose armor customization options from a predesigned list.

Repetitive and a little time consuming

I mentioned earlier that unhorsing your opponent feels satisfying, but after 10 jousting battles it becomes a little tedious and time consuming to have to watch all of the slow motion, body flailing and your character ride around in victory. I would appreciate at least a fast forward button.

Also during every joust battle, players need to move their lance to the left and down. It's always to the left and down. It would've been nice to make the lance harder to aim to give battles more of a challenge. I have never missed or been outside of the red + sign during a joust. Perhaps the lance would bob up and down with your horse's strides, maybe don't have the game go into slow motion or perhaps your character's aim gets better as you level?

Awards for glory points

I like the addition of multiplayer, but I wish there was something more I could earn with the glory points. Perhaps after X amount of glory points players would get a gem, could earn aesthetic items like banners or streamers to hang from their lance? It would give players more incentive to battle online besides leaderboard positioning. Players' interest in global leaderboards will diminish over time as the leaders further distance themselves from the rest of the pack and other players churn.

It would also be cool if MunkyFun hosted some sort of tournament for a reward. Jousting was almost always a tournament event back then, so the context fits perfectly.

Better sense of damage

You can knock off shields and helmets, and I'm sure it technically gives that player/opponent a disadvantage but it's not as drastic as one might think. In a real jousting battle if one lost a helmet you're pretty much dead next round, and if you lost your shield then you'd most likely be unhorsed the next round. However in Knight Storm, when losing a shield or helmet it just places a broken armor icon at the bottom of your stats and doesn't appear to decrease them.

Sigils with multiple attributes

I talked about the rock, paper, scissors aspect to battles as a nice addition, but players can also get sigils with two attributes. Then it gets confusing which is considered the main and secondary. Is there even a main and secondary attribute? I'm not even sure. If sigils with multiple attributes are used in battle then I just have to wait for the game to tell me which wins and I don't have a concrete answer as to why. Players can also aim at two or three areas on an opponent with these sigils, but I don't think it matters which target they choose. Does the head deal more damage than the shield or left arm? It would also be nice if certain areas took damage so players would try to target the same area repeatedly.

Knight Storm certainly piqued my interest when I saw it. Both in context and developer. It's a great example of how games can look, and worth a play. I don't know if the game has the ability for mass market penetration because of the theme, but a successful game doesn't always need that. If they just tweak some of the monetization mechanics and increase the difficulty then I think they'd could really boost their metrics. I look forward to seeing how they update on this one!

If you'd like to talk about this or any other games you can find me here at my blog or on Twitter.

Sanity Slips Away!

What's going on everyone!?

Today was a pretty rough day and I actually ended up hurting my back more than ever. It really sucks and is insanely painful but it's not like I knew I was going to hurt my back today any worse than it already is.

For the #2019gameaday challenge I played a game of Elder Sign: Omens and completely succumbed to the darkness.

As always, thank you for reading and don't forget to stop and smell the meeples!  :)

SaltCon 2019, Preview

SaltCon 2019 is about a week away. Held at the end of February, this tabletop gaming convention is a great place to be for everyone who enjoys all of the non-electronic games we play with our families and friends. Thursday, February 28, through Sunday, March 3, with all types of games and events. The die-hard players can even push through and play non-stop (like we used to do when we were much younger).

This is the 11th year for SaltCon and my 8thyear attending either by just being a player attending, volunteer running roleplaying games (RPGs), or being on panels. Although the role of my attendance has changed, the experience has been good every year and has kept me coming back for more.

One aspect that sets SaltCon apart from other conventions where gaming is available is SaltCon is about gaming, for gamers, hosted by gamers. Gaming is not a sideline attraction, it's the main event. This isn't the only convention that does this. But the group putting together SaltCon does it well.

What you can expect

The first year I went I didn't know what to expect. It was in a hotel where I had been training for my day job. I knew the size of the place and figured it would be a couple dozen people playing some games they'd brought with them. I grossly underestimated.

The game rooms were packed with players. There were enough players for the convention to move the following year to a larger location. That growth continued to where it is held at the Davis County Convention Center. Last year I know they had over 1200 people in attendance (I know it was more but at least that many). This year they expect the same numbers of gamers. This is a good match for the size of the location. There are a lot of people, but not so many to make people crammed.

From a previous year
You can bring your own games. People bring their own games because they might be looking for a place they can meet up and play or find new players. However, there are a number of different ways to be playing games you don't have. You can play the games others have brought. SaltCon also has an extensive game library. The library has great older games and new games just coming out. There is no extra charge to play the games and they have a system for using the convention badge for quick and easy check in and out to allow more time at the table. A part of the games SaltCon provides are included in their 'play to win' section. Play any of the games there and you are entered into a drawing to win it.

Not only players attend. Every year SaltCon hosts the Ion Awards for game design. For the designers, there is Prototype Alley where you can play or demo games being worked on. I have enjoyed playing these games including some that are now available on the market. These are not just local developers. I've had the opportunity of meeting people from across the United States and Canada. You can get a jump on what is hot by sitting in on these games, then you can let friends know what to watch for. Those games that are farther along can also be found by a number of vendors sharing their games.

If you have ever wanted to be the first to have a game, then you need to check out the companies there. There are always independent game companies presenting new games. The booths are another great place to play some fun new games. Along with the games, there are artists and other groups. There is always something for everyone and it is easy for me to find more than I can afford.

If you are looking for something older, there is the 'games trade and swap meet'. Last year the trading corner was quite the hive of activity. I saw games from my childhood (and that is going back awhile). There were also newer games people found just didn't match their style of play. If you have games you aren't playing, it is a great place to turn them into a little cash, or new games.

SaltCon has RPGs. I know last year they were running a couple dozen tables. This year they are doing at least that many. D&D and Pathfinder are represented along with a number of other systems. I have played games that were in development along with some big name games like D&D, Star Wars, Paranoia, and Seven Seas. The last couple of years, the D&D group has run a multi-table player event that was amazing.

Along with playing the RPGs, there is a mini painting competition. This isn't the only tournament taking place. There are many throughout the convention for fun, prizes, and national qualifiers.

Panels are also available about games, gaming, and developing games. You can find out more about how to be  part of the industry. There are people involved in different levels willing to share their experiences and knowledge.

Podcasting has been a part of the past and I expect to see podcasters there again. You can see what they are doing and how they do it. You might even end up on one if you look around and watch what is going on.

SaltCon is a fun place to be. I'm looking forward to being there. There is no way I can cover everything that will be taking place in one short article, so check out their website (SaltCon home page). Find something of interest. And meet us there. Tell people hi and why you're there. You'll find you've just become part of a larger family with a lot of new friends.

The Tinfoil Gets Tighter

No, still nothing on "Chris Neo" (yet). However, he did post something on Facebook that needs to be seen.

For those that can't read it, here's the text. Complete with typos.

"If you've been wondering why my paranormal website has been offline for so long, well we've been sifting through the code and I just found out it was hacked. The timing of this event seemed to have occured after I called out the celebs in the paranormal field for suppressing my new methods. So this is how it is eh? One has to have alot of insecurities if you feel you need to try and silence my work this way. A big special thanks to the fans that keep tweeting and tagging these paranormal celebs of my existence and pushing my work on them. I've met them all and gauged their reactions to me and my research and I can tell it annoys them to no end that I broke down their entire western ghost hunting approach through a pyschological mindset and pasted it back together in a way that they cannot duplicate so easily. And you'll be happy to know, I've made a huge breakthrough this summer with investigating that I haven't even made public. Very exciting stuff that I even can't talk about yet since I'm still breaking down all the nuiances. Thank you for your continued support."

Oh... wow. Fucking wow.

Turns out he didn't let his domain just lapse, no it was HACKED! Right after he called out the "eeeevil" celebs! This can't be real.
How about naming these celebrities Chris? Are you afraid or are you just full of shit? You do this all the time, like those "hundreds of YouTubers" from 2006/07 you watched as inspiration instead of the AVGN. It's always a lot of people but nobody in particular. That Alex Jones influence is really showing itself. "It's never my fault, it's always the fault of someone else."

You say you met these people and they were annoyed with you? How did you know that? Could you tell from their expression, tone or demeanor? Perhaps they were annoyed with something else. Like how this shitheel from Ohio is coming in with these long debunked methods and is trying to pass them off as new. They probably even told you that but you didn't listen because you can't take criticism.
"Cannot duplicate easily"? What's so hard? Learning to ask if being dead is different from being alive? Learning which beeps on your overpriced devices are different? You don't do anything revolutionary or different!

How did you know it was hacked? Was there something specific that warned you? You gave no indication of being a computer or code expert. This is sounding more and more like an excuse for being lazy and forgetting to pay the domain name. I like to think that if someone hacked you, they wouldn't just take it down. They'd replace the page with like Illuminati shit, though your tinfoil wearing ass would probably think it was legit considering your hilarious meltdown over Nickelodeon.

What "experts" are your "fans" tweeting at? Give us names!

So you say you made a huge breakthrough this summer. Really?: You sure it wasn't filled with making stupid videos about toys? Videos like his latest "PENNYWISE IT Movie FUNKO CEREAL UNBOXING! NECA Exclusive Mini Pop Action Figure SERIES 2"
... Oh my god are you serious? Oh yeah, that lovable kids movie It. Featuring such child-friendly scenes like an opening with a 7 year old getting his arm torn off. Seriously what is it with Funko making these joke cereals on violent properties? At least with Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street they haven't had movies in years.

Continued support huh? You have over 3000 Facebook friends, and yet as of this post, only 4 of them commented. Makes me wonder how many are just inactive accounts, I know I gave up Facebook.

So what's your favorite brand of foil Chris? The old classic Reynolds, the cheaper Walmart, or maybe something local?
